Biodiversiteit op de Scheldeschorren OMA
Van den Bergh, E.; Huiskes, A.; Criel, B.; Meire, P..
The tidal marshes along the Scheldt estuary are rather unique in Europe, because they still exist along the complete salinity gradient. Key ecological factors for the vegetation are salinity, tidal regime and current and historical management. A general portrait with the most characterising plant species as well as a succession scheme are presented for salt, brackish and fresh tidal marshes separately, because they have few plant species and vegetation types in common. Tidal regime changes as a combined effect of sea level rise and the channel deepening in the Westerscheldt. This affects the marsh vegetation. Biodiversity patterns and factors affecting the distribution of species on the tidal marshes are discussed for plants, gastropodes, arthropodes and...

Développement d’outils de classement de qualité des eaux côtières et de transition pour la DCE. Elément de qualité « schorres ». ArchiMer
Rossi, Nadège.
Among the biological quality elements monitored under the WFD, salt marshes are still not assessed in France. To evaluate ways to develop an assessment tool for this biological quality element, methodologies already applied by other member states have been identified and analyzed. Despite a very thorough job in assessing the ecological status of salt marshes, no pressure-impact relationship has been demonstrated. In addition, the pressures identified are related to the hydromorphological characteristics. A study was conducted to study saltmarshes not as a biological quality element but as a hydromorphological quality element. It shows that with simple procedure, it is possible to follow the evolution of the total area of salt marshes which can give...

Distinguishing natural evolution and human impact on estuarine morpho-sedimentary development: A case study from the Vilaine Estuary, France ArchiMer
Traini, C.; Proust, J. -n.; Menier, D.; Mathew, M. J..
Estuaries are coastal areas controlled by hydrodynamic factors such as sea-level changes, waves and tidal currents, and river discharge. This study focuses on the Vilaine Estuary which is strongly impacted by human activity after construction of Arzal dam in 1970. The purpose of this research is to differentiate the role of natural from anthropogenic factors on sediment dynamics within the Vilaine Estuary. We are proposing a hypothetical model based on the hydrodynamic modification and morpho-sedimentary development by analyzing the natural estuarine evolution and the impact of human alteration to the natural system by utilizing datasets including river discharge, tidal currents, winds and wave activities to further combine with photographic, bathymetric,...

Early postlarval fish in the hyperbenthos of the Dutch Delta (south-west Netherlands) OMA
Beyst, B.; Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A..
Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37...
